Introducing Myofunctional Therapy: A New Service at Our Practice

We’re excited to share that our practice is now offering Myofunctional Therapy—a specialized, non-invasive treatment designed to improve the function of the muscles of the face, tongue, and mouth. This therapy can play a powerful role in supporting oral health, breathing, sleep quality, and overall wellness for both children and adults.

What Are Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)?

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) refer to improper function of the muscles in the face and mouth. These patterns can affect how we breathe, chew, swallow, and even how our teeth and jaws develop.

Common signs of OMDs include:

  • Mouth breathing (instead of nasal breathing)
  • Tongue thrusting or improper tongue posture
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Speech concerns
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep
  • Orthodontic relapse (teeth shifting after braces)

When these muscle patterns are not functioning properly, they can contribute to dental issues such as misalignment, bite problems, and can even impact facial development in children.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy is a customized program of exercises that retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw to function correctly. Think of it like physiotherapy—but for the muscles of the mouth and face.

The goals of therapy include:

  • Promoting proper tongue posture (resting on the roof of the mouth)
  • Encouraging nasal breathing
  • Establishing correct swallowing patterns
  • Supporting optimal jaw and facial development
  • Enhancing stability of orthodontic results

Treatment is gentle, structured, and tailored to each patient’s specific needs. It typically involves guided exercises practiced both in-office and at home.

Myofunctional Therapy for Children

Early intervention can make a significant difference in a child’s growth and development. For children, myofunctional therapy can:

  • Support proper jaw and facial development
  • Reduce or eliminate mouth breathing habits
  • Improve sleep quality and reduce snoring
  • Help correct habits like thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use
  • Enhance the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment

By addressing these issues early, we can often help prevent more complex dental or airway concerns later on.

Myofunctional Therapy for Adults

It’s never too late to benefit from myofunctional therapy. For adults, treatment can help:

  • Improve breathing patterns and reduce mouth breathing
  • Decrease snoring and support better sleep quality
  • Relieve jaw tension or discomfort (including TMJ-related symptoms)
  • Maintain orthodontic results
  • Enhance overall oral function and muscle coordination

Many adults are surprised to learn how much these small muscle patterns can impact daily comfort and long-term health.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

Myofunctional therapy often works best as part of a comprehensive care plan. We may collaborate with orthodontists, ENT specialists, sleep professionals, and other healthcare providers to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
